Do you constantly find yourself staying up until midnight (or later) to finish your work? Do you think that the work you did at midnight was low quality and unimpressive work? If you answered yes to either of the questions above, you probably are one of the millions of procrastinators in the world. Procrastination has become a very popular and bad habit, and it is the most known habit in the teenage world. Here are some common reasons as to why you might be procrastinating:
1. Spending Your Free Time On The Computer, Television, Or Video Games
It is a common habit for teens to set their priorities last on their schedules. The kids often tell themselves, “I will stop playing in one hour,? but guess what? That hour turns into a whole afternoon wasted. It is important to ensure that you set your priorities first, and then go on to have fun.
2. Daydreaming
It is fine to daydream only if you are daydreaming about the right things. Daydreaming is another common way to waste time. Dreaming about what you are eating for dinner tonight, is definitely wasting precious time. During the time you are dreaming about the food, why not concentrate and get some work done?
3. Saying Yes To Everything
Some people are simply too shy to say the word “no,? to requests that their friends make. In the end, you end up having too many appointments with your friends, and you are unsure as to what to do. You discover that you have a huge history project due tomorrow, but you do not want to disappoint your friend. For your friend, you meet her, spend a whole evening with her, and end up having to work late into the night on your project.
Those are only three extremely common reasons as to why you may be procrastinating. Have you ever thought about how to change them?
- Have a friend or family member monitor you as you work. This will be a tough job for your family member, but in the end, you do get work done and have even more time to relax and enjoy yourself.
- Use your alarm clock to alert you. As you work, set time limits. Make sure that you do not work on one assignment forever that might not be due yet – move onto something else to save time for yourself later.
- Give yourself a reward every time you set priorities first. This does not mean playing on the computer for two hours afterwards – get a light snack, go out for a walk, or just pat yourself on the back.
It takes 30 days to change a bad habit. Remember that trying not to procrastinate will not come easily. There will definitely be times when you find yourself choosing between the television and your pile of projects.
